Motion Control: For runners who are mild to severe overpronators. Generally they need extra support on the medial side, as well as rearfoot control, and the bigger runner/ heavy heel-striker often is best served by this kind of shoe.
Stability: For runners who need medial (arch-side) support and good midsole cushioning. Usually these shoes are good for runners who are mild to moderate overpronators, needing added support and durability.
Protective Cushioning: This is a new category. Shoes in this category contain more cushioning then stability shoes and more stability then cushioning shoes. For high mileage runner seeking the maximum combination of cushioning and stability.
Cushioning: For runner needing maximum midsole cushioning, but who are blomechanically efficient (do not overpronate). Suitable for forefoot or midfoot strikers.
Light Weight Performance: For runners who are efficient and want a lightweight cushioned shoe for training and, often, speedwork and racing.
Racing Flats: For road racing, not a suitable shoe for daily training. The emphasis is on weight, not biomechanics.
Racing Spikes: For racing off-road: there is a wide variety due to the many different surfaces this catagory includes. These shoes have removable spikes and can accommodate spikes of various lengths. Again, the emphasis is on weight, and traction.
Trail: Off road running shoes are generally a good over all running shoe, mostly cushioned or with light stability. Designed for running on even terrain, they are durable, provide extra traction, and can take the rigors of running on trails through inclement weather. With tough water resistant uppers as well as in most cases extra protection for the toe box.
